Progress & Funding

Significant progress has already been made in upgrading Route 51 from two-lanes to four-lanes.

North Segment Decatur (I-72) to Vandalia (I-70) 60 miles
Approximately 35% of the work has been completed or is in progress. The estimated funding needed to complete the North Segment is $300 – 320 million.

  • The Phase I Engineering Study is complete to south of Pana
  • The Phase I Engineering Study from Pana to Centralia begins Spring 2007
  • The Phase II Engineering Design is complete or in progress to south of Pana
  • The Phase III Construction is complete or in-progress to north of Assumption

South Segment Vandalia (I-70) to I-64 39 miles
Approximately 25% of the work has been completed. The estimated funding needed to complete the South Segment is $292 – 322 million.

  • The Phase I, II, and III work is complete for the 9-mile roadway section from Centralia south to I-64.
